Martin McDonagh, ancora qualcuno che in epoca sovrabbondanze e sprechi  compie un passo dopo l’altro. Lo s'indovinava nel 2009, a proposito del suo primo lungometraggio IN BRUGES. Firmato dal giovane drammaturgo destinato a diventare uno degli eredi di Harold Pinter: Nato a Londra ma di origine irlandese; e lo si capiva.  A 27 anni, eguagliava qualcosa riuscito soltanto a Shakespeare: uscire in contemporanea nel West-End londinese con quattro delle sue drammaturgie. Mentre dietro la maestria dei dialoghi, tipica dell’autore teatrale, già s’intuiva l'insolito nerbo visuale del cineasta.

Surrealista e paradossale, esilarante e melanconico, esaltato e crepuscolare, nel 2017 il  suo terzo lungometraggio, TRE MANIFESTI A EBBING, MISSOURI, con una memorabile Frances McDormand è ancora qualcosa d'imprevedibile. I suoi personaggi vengono collocati su una scacchiera stravagante, quasi allo scopo di farci dubitare dei cattivi, ma egualmente dei buoni. Esattamente come il tono del film, e cioè del suo significato più intimo: disincantato e crudele, paradossale e realista, lucido e sarcastico.

Tutte caratteristiche che ritroviamo riprese, per essere subito abbandonate, in questa sorta di favola sul concetto di amicizia che ci facciamo, THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN. Una riflessione insolita, che trova la sua coesione nella formidabile cornice straniante rappresentata della costa irlandese. In una fantomatica isola Inisherin che sopravvive nella sua immobilità temporale. Come nutrendosi degli echi di una guerra civile che in quegli inizi del secolo scorso le giungono ad intermittenza dalla terraferma.

I due magnifici protagonisti, Colin Farrell e Brendan Gleeson, confluiscono in quell'universo particolare dai tempi di IN BRUGES  Là,  erano due killer che venivano spediti dal mandante a far perdere le tracce nell’oleografia celebre della Venezia del Nord.. Qui, sono due amici di lunghissima data in una vita spesa nell'isola splendida e semi deserta: quando, per una ragione inesplicabile, forse ingiustificabile, uno dei due decide di spezzare il legame fraterno. Gli interrogativi posti dallo spettatore saranno forse suggeriti, di certo non risolti: acquistando però progressivamente un raro valore esistenziale, delicato, al tempo stesso triste e disincantato, assurdo e tormentato.  

Come alimentato dalla violenza della natura che gli fa da sfondo, GLI SPIRITI DELL'ISOLA si fa allora quasi rassegnato a quella bruma che si solleva dal mare, come dai suoni che giungono aldilà  dalle onde. Ed egualmente nella mutevolezza di quella natura così splendida e prepotente che si cela il mistero e la sorpresa che indoviniamo nell'intimo dei personaggi di Martin McDonagh.

Martin McDonagh, still someone who takes one step after the other in the age of excess and waste. This was guessed in 2009, with regard to his first feature film IN BRUGES. Signed by the young playwright destined to become one of Harold Pinter's heirs: Born in London but of Irish origin; and you could tell.  At the age of 27, he equalled something only Shakespeare succeeded in: coming out simultaneously in London's West-End with four of his plays. While behind the mastery of dialogue, typical of the playwright, one could already sense the unusual visual nerve of the filmmaker.

Surrealist and paradoxical, exhilarating and melancholic, exalted and crepuscular, in 2017 his third feature film, THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI, starring a memorable Frances McDormand is still something of an unpredictable film. His characters are placed on an extravagant chessboard, almost with the aim of making us doubt the bad guys, but equally the good guys. Exactly like the tone of the film, its most intimate meaning: disenchanted and cruel, paradoxical and realistic, lucid and sarcastic.

All characteristics that we find taken up, only to be immediately abandoned, in this sort of fable about the concept of friendship that we make,THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN. An unusual reflection, which finds its cohesion in the formidable alienating setting represented by the Irish coast. On a phantom island Inisherin survives in its temporal immobility. As if nourished by the echoes of a civil war that intermittently reach it from the mainland at the beginning of the last century.

The two magnificent protagonists, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, flow into that particular universe since IN BRUGES. There, they were two killers who were sent by their principals to lose their tracks in the famous oleography of Northern Venice. Here, they are two long-time friends in a life spent on the splendid, semi-deserted island: when, for an inexplicable, perhaps unjustifiable reason, one of them decides to break the brotherly bond. The questions posed to the spectator will perhaps be suggested, certainly not resolved: however, they progressively acquire a rare existential value, at once sad and disenchanted, absurd and tormented.  

As if nourished by the violence of the nature that forms its backdrop, THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN  then becomes almost resigned to the mist that rises from the sea, like the sounds that come over the waves. And equally in the mutability of that nature, so splendid and overpowering, lies the mystery and surprise that we guess at in the depths of Martin McDonagh's characters.
